Williams Syndrome

What it is:
Williams Syndrome is a rare genetic condition caused by the deletion of specific genes on chromosome 7. It affects cognitive development, cardiovascular health, and learning abilities. Students often have strong language and social skills but may struggle with spatial reasoning, math, and problem-solving.

What to look out for:
Students may be highly verbal and socially engaging, often showing empathy and friendliness beyond their years. However, they may struggle with tasks involving numbers, maps, or abstract reasoning. Anxiety and sensitivity to sound or bright lights can also be present.

Real-life example:
During a geography lesson, a student can name countries and talk about travel experiences confidently but struggles to read a map or calculate distances. They may also become anxious in noisy classrooms or during group activities that require complex coordination.

How it affects learning:
While language-based tasks may be strengths, math, sequencing, and spatial tasks require additional support. Sensory sensitivities or social anxiety can impact participation. Students may excel in creative and verbal projects but fall behind in structured problem-solving exercises.

Best learning strategies:

  • Use visual aids and hands-on materials for math and spatial tasks.

  • Provide clear, step-by-step instructions and repeat as needed.

  • Offer a quiet, structured environment to reduce sensory overload.

  • Incorporate verbal and creative projects that build on strengths.

  • Encourage social skill development through guided interaction and peer support.
